Keeping up with the Carravaggio's VA by Kyle Darnell

This week's online assignment is brought to you by Sophie Nicholson.

If you could resurrect one artist and give them a reality TV show, who would you choose and why?

I'd choose Caravaggio because he was just as dramatic as his paintings. Not only is he remembered as being arrogant and rebellious, he literally just. Challenged people to sword fights. Randomly. Who does that? Caravaggio does. According to one of his biographers: ''after a fortnight's work he will swagger about for a month or two with his sword at his side and with a servant following him, from one ball-court to the next, ever ready to engage in a fight or argument, with the result that it is most awkward to get along with him''. After reading that, tell me you wouldn't love to see this man thrown into modern society and put on TV. I don't even watch reality television, but I would pay to see some sort of Keeping Up With Caravaggio. Aside from just his hypothetical value as a source of entertainment, I definitely would not be complaining if he could come back and make more artwork. It would be super cool to see what new stuff he'd make and how his art would change in reaction to the modern world.

Ask Anybody Anything VA by Kyle Darnell

This week I want you to post your own online assignment. Obviously make it art related and PG, but I want you to ask interesting questions, preferably with a supporting document and your own example of how it would be answered.

Heres my question which is its own type of response:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Watch

The Night Watch by Rembrandt is rad, but could it be better if instead of the ghost of Rembrandts wife, it was ham sandwich? What artwork would benefit from replacing one item with food?

Personally I think it could work, but you would need to suspend some amount of doubt and just go with it. An obvious example would be Grant Wood's "American Gothic" where you replaced the farmer with an ear of corn. I wonder if you could replace food with a person tho. Like Claes Odenberg's "Spoon Bridge" being replaced with just a big ol picture of his big dumb face.

Art You Like VA by Kyle Darnell

Post a link to an artist you like.  Please refrain from the Ninja Turtles (DaVinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello), try to find someone more current. Write a little bit about what you like and how you would recomend them to others.

Here is mine.

Trenton Doyle Hancock

http://www.jamescohan.com/artists/trenton-doyle-hancock/

Trenton Doyle Hancock deals with issues ranging from current political climate, cool scenerery, to the deeper recesses of the artists' mind. His work is dynamic, playful, dark, and super weird. I would recommend him to anyone who enjoys an artist at play.

See, simple and to the point. These discussions will be posted every Monday and due every Sunday.

wHaT iS yOuR fiNaL PrOjEcT??? by Kyle Darnell

Tell me what your final project is please. If you are making extra pieces also please let me know what those are as well, just so I know what is coming my way. A reminder, you can turn in the final for 100 points, make sure this one is your best and most worthy of the points, then you can turn in up to 4 projects worth 50 points each.

Extra credit opportunity. For 10 points xc, write a story. It can be about your project or whatever, please try to make it your own and not be too long.

Seniors, do this by friday @3.

Ketchup Week VA by Kyle Darnell

There is no new assignment this week. Instead I am giving you the opportunity to complete assignments you missed for half credit. Doesn't sound like much, but it is way better than a zero.

Now I am not going to dig through all the posts to find who caught up on what, when. You will need to comment on this with which ones you caught up on and I will double check it from there. If you don't write anything here, I will assume you didn't need it.

Water Exhibition Vis Art by Kyle Darnell

Due (hopefully) Mar 3rd is our entry into the Evansville Water and Sewer exhibition. These works need to be on paper and center around how water is essential to our daily lives. You get to decide how to work with this theme and in what media. Watercolor would be an obvious choice but could wrinkle your paper quite a bit so keep that in mind. The size isn't too important but I would avoid giant and microscopic.

So, tell me what you think you want to do. You can start the project immediately and as mentioned before, 1st place gets $100 and the rest hand in the Civic Center. For those of you thinking about going to college for art you need to start building your resume.

Fictional Art VA by Kyle Darnell

Who is an artist that illustrates a fictional character you like. This can range from comics to cartoons to illustrated novels. Post a link with a little write up about the person.

For example I always liked how Todd MacFarlane illustrated Spiderman. There has been dozens of people responsible for illustrating spiderman, but the way he captured the value range of writhing acrobatic muscles had a dark otherworldly appeal. He would go on from that to create his own Comic Publishing company called Image comics and is most known for the series Spawn.

What are you into? VA by Kyle Darnell

Were all into stuff that other people aren't. Hobbies aren't just a means to relax they are a way that helps connect us. So tell me what you are into. Don't just say video games or poetry, tell me which type, how do you use that to connect in a community. Here is my example.

"In High School I was really into music, specifically Metal bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah. I really couldn't stand what any of my peers were listening to at the time so I used that music as a way of finding like minded people. I followed the music online to a website called Gamefaqs, where they had specific message boards geared to music. And since it was a bunch of video game nerds like myself, I was able immediately connect with them and discover new music online. Side note, I am still friends with that small group some 13 years later and we check in on each other even though we have all gone our separate ways, with our own careers."

Caliber II Titles VA by Kyle Darnell

We have a big art show called Caliber II Saturday, April 7th from 12-2pm. We spent last week framing so now we need get our titles together. It will be your name, title, media, and price. When calculating price consider how much work you put into it, how much you think its worth, the price of materials, and more importantly a 35% commission that the arts council takes. You do not have to sell it, in that scenario you will write NFS instead of a price.

Here is my example, I need you to copy, paste and input your own information in the comments. I need these preferably by Thursday

Your Name
"Title"
Media $Price

Portraits VA by Kyle Darnell

Next week we will be starting Portraits in Pencil. I would like for you to find an artist that works primarily in Portraits, post a link, and talk about their method/style. We will be working pencils and blending, but that doesn't mean you have single out that type of artist, just find someone that is interesting to you.

Printmaking Artist VA by Kyle Darnell

You are currently working on an assignment in relief printmaking. Your online assignment this week is to find an artist that works in Relief printmaking, do a quick write up on them on one to two art pieces, and post a link to their work. There are a lot of printmakers who work in relief as their main focus, but you will find several who do it in addition to something else. This is fine, Albrect Durer is a fine example of a printmaking artist who worked in several media, but if you were to write about him I would expect further attention to be payed to his relief pieces.

You will find three different relief media; woodcut, wood engraving, and linoleum. Any of these are fine to write about. You will not find historical examples of linoleum as it is a media developed in the 1910's by Pablo Picasso. If you need help finding artist my brain is full of more info on Printmaking than anything else, so just ask.

Art Conspiracy Theories VA by Kyle Darnell

A conspiracy going around is that the CIA funded the Abstract Expressionism movement to convince Soviet Russia how free and awesome USA was. It is a bit far fetched but to be honest it has its merits. Why else would anyone care about Jackson Pollack if it wasn't a global conspiracy? Go ahead and read this article about it to get a really good idea how something like this can happen. http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20161004-was-modern-art-a-weapon-of-the-cia

I want you to come up with your own grand art conspiracy. I am expecting at least 2 paragraphs on this and will be giving you an extra week to complete it. It will also be worth double points so really spend some time on this. And you can come up with any sort of conspiracy theory you want. From secret spies acting as artists, to the declaration of independence is hidden inside of the Death of Marat by Jaques Louis David. Make sure you come up with a why.

These should be weird. If they are good enough I will try to slip them into my FAC classes as facts.

Artist Catchphrase VA by Kyle Darnell

This week's online assignment is courtesy of Emmalee Gladding.

Pick an artist that you think creates interesting art pieces. After looking through some of their work, come up with a slogan that portrays their techniques or their motivations. Did looking back on a majority of their compositions improve your ideals about them?

For example take the work of Mark Rothko, he creates large paintings of rectangles drafted in different colors. I have been in many art museums looking at pieces similar to these where people around me have said something along the lines of "Why is that in here, I could have done that." So the catch phrase I would give to the portfolio of Rothko is, "put your money where your mouth is". If the people at the art museum can make art the same way Rothko can, then I'd like to see them try.

Don't forget to explain why you choose a certain catch phrase for your artist!

Video Demo by Kyle Darnell

I would like for you to like me to a youtube video of a drawing demonstration. Preferably an informative one. It doesn't need to be about figures necessarily, it can just be one that you found helpful and you think more people should know about it.

Keep it school appropriate, geez.
